Dear Neighbors:

Below is an e-mail we have just received from Major Daniel A. Dusseau, PGPD District 1 Commander, in response to our inquiry about the 2nd robbery suspect in the manhunt of Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 in CPW:

Subject: RE: More on second suspect?

Good afternoon,

I have been in contact with our CID Robbery Unit (they are conducting the investigation)  they have an idea who the suspect might be but can’t as of yet prove it.  The person that was actually arrested had his last address on 85th Ave in New Carrollton.  (His new one is the jail in Upper Marlboro.)

There is nothing to indicate that he is anywhere in the area.  In fact my experience says that he has probably fled the area.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Please be on the alert — with the economic downturn continuing, we may experience more incidents like this everywhere.

Thank you all in advance for doing your part to help keep our neighborhood safe.

Dear Neighbors:

A number of you have asked for an update on the manhunt in CPW yesterday, and we’re still trying to get an official update from the police.  We will send out an update as soon as we have further information.  In the meantime, here’s a Gazette news story on the incident that you might like to read:  http://www.gazette.net/stories/06232009/prinnew155021_32560.shtml

Bob Ryan, Director of Public Services for the City of College Park, has sent us the following important tips to keep in mind as we work to build a safe neighborhood:

Regarding 9-1-1:  “We have updated our advice based on police recommendations that any suspicious activity where suspects are still present on the scene should be reported to 9-1-1 the same as any other incidents still in progress.  The non-emergency number 301-333-4000 should be used to report non-violent crimes discovered after the fact, e.g. broken windows, or more general concerns for chronic suspicious activity.”

Regarding the pursuit of suspected offenders in the neighborhood:  “I hope the police officers warned of the danger in pursuing suspects, even though useful information was obtained.  We need to remind neighborhood watch participants that their personal safety is the highest priority.”

Let’s keep these in mind as we look out for the safety of our neighborhood.

From one of our neighbors at 1:09pm. That was about the time the State Police helicopter stooped circling. One of our block captains reported seeing 13 police cars when she entered the neighborhood.

“There is a Manhunt currently in progress in CPW. Two men robbed a bank in Bowie MD and were chased. Their car was dumped on east Duke Street and one of the suspects is in custody. However the other suspect is assumed to be on the loose somewhere in our neighborhood. A description of the suspect is a black male, wearing blue jeans and a blue t-shirt.

Suspect is considered armed and dangerous – call police with any information  – DO not attempt to make contact or confront.”

Dear Neighbors:

We’re forwarding the following message for those of you who might be interested — please contact Stacey King (below) if you wish to be added to the mosquito spraying list.

—– Forwarded Message —–

I just got the confirmation letter from MD Dept of Agriculture, and surveillance/spraying is scheduled for Wednesday nights, starting this week. I have reported all spray requests that I have received so far, so provided the weather is cooperating, you may very well see MDA vehicles and/or technicians out conducting surveys and eventually spraying this Wednesday.  Also attached is a newsletter MDA has developed to provide a little more education about mosquito control on individual properties. You may like to pass this around to your neighborhood contacts as well.

Thanks and have a nice afternoon,

Stacey

Dear Neighbors:

We have just received the following report from a resident on Bridgewater Street:

<<Yesterday, June 16th, our house on Bridgewater Street was robbed sometime around 10 a.m.  No one was home.  The robbers entered the house from an open window in the back.  They took only small electronic equiptment and $6 in cash – but nothing else.  Neighbors saw two individuals:  one who likely entered the house and one who sat at the corner of Marlbrough Way (The Court section on Bridgewater) as a possible look-out.  One individual had a blue and white bicycle (very rusted) and left the house carying a black bag.  The suspects did carry a knife through the house and blocked entry throught the front door with a chair.  The incident was reported to the PGC police. >>

Another resident on Bridgewater Street reported the following yesterday:

<<We have noticed someone looking into vehicles as they walk down the street (Bridgewater) and a neighbor actually saw the same person lean into a parked car’s open window.>>

Please be on the alert and report any suspicious activity to the police right away at 301-333-4000.  You may even call 911 if you sense that the suspects are about to commit a crime.  Once you’ve made your report to the police, please e-mail us a report so we can spread the word and alert the neighborhood.

Dear Neighbors:

We have received the following report from a resident on the 3700 block of Marlbrough Way:

<<On the night of Tuesday, June 9th, approximately 9:45 p.m., . . . I heard a very distinct noise that seemed to sound like a pack of firecrackers exploding as it sounded very very close to our house.  As I proceeded out towards the front of our house, . . . I was able to pretty much confirm the use of firecrackers as I was able to detect the distinct smell of the aftermath of firecrackers as I approached the lower part of our neighbor’s driveway a few minutes after the incident.  The following day, my neighbor directly across the street brought this late-night incident up to me as they too were wondering if we had heard what they did as well.

<<On the following night of June 10th, also approximately 9:45 p.m., . . . I heard the sound of rapid … very heavy banging … clearly right at our front screen door. . . I witnessed flames more than a foot high just right outside of our front screen door.  As I quickly approached the front door to deal with the fire from possibly spreading, I also heard a car starting to pull away from in front of our property.  As I exited the house onto the sidewalk, I was able to clearly see the tail light configuration as the car pulled off going up the street north-bound. . . . after making sure the fire was completely out, I quickly proceeded in one of our vehicles [and] was able intercept this car . . . [a] 4-door [gray] late model BMW. . . Maryland Tags 8EW T90.   I believe the car model was even a 535i. . . I was able to catch a significant side profile of the driver as I flipped my High beams on . . . . Eventually I was able to even clearly see another young early to at least mid 20’s Caucasian male in the front right passenger . . . . In total, there were 4 occupants . . . .

<< . . . all the information that is included in this email has been previously disclosed to PG County Police Department with Officer Lanahan (sic?) and Officer Johnson . . . .

<<Prior to these two successive night-time incidents, there has never been any significant incident at this house beyond a break-in back in 1967, a year after moving into the neighborhood over 43 years ago.  This also  includes the fact that we have not had a missing UPS package as the case is now in any of our recent or long term recollection of our memories . . . . >>

Please be on the alert, and if you have any information that might help solve this case, report it to the police at 301-333-4000.

Dear Neighbors:

We have received the following report from a resident on the 9300 block of Davidson Street:

<< My 2000 Chevy Tahoe was broken into on Friday, June 12, 2009 at approximately 1 p.m.  The perpetrator(s) accessed interior of vehicle by breaking the driver’s door window.  According to my mom (who first noticed the crime scene), the center console was opened and CD cases inside of compartment were lying on the driver’s seat.  She looked around to see if anything else was missing or tampered with, but couldn’t tell if anything was stolen.  Police were notified and response was immediate.  Police officer provided case # and took fingerprints for evidence.  At the time the officer came, I was wasn’t home to make a report and he left his contact information.  I spoke with him over the phone and he told me to see what was stolen, if any, and he would return the following day at 6 p.m.  Fortunately, to my knowledge, nothing was stolen.  Police officer did return on Saturday, June 13, 2009 @ 6 p.m. to follow up on the case, and I informed him that to my knowledge nothing looked like it was stolen. >>

The police officer also informed the victim’s mom  that this was the second vehicle break-in report received from College Park Woods that day.  (We have not received a report from the victim of the other break-in to elaborate on it.)

Please be on the alert and report to the police (301-333-4000) any information you have that might help bring a resolution to these crimes.

Dear Neighbors:

The following items will be addressed:

1.     Dr. Ann Wylie from the University of Maryland will discuss the University’s proposal to move their recycling facility to Metzerott Road near the University of Maryland Observatory (across from the System Administration facility).  It is very important that the community be present and engage in this discussion to understand the expected increased traffic and noise.
