Celebrate 100 years of flight at College Park Airport!  .

Food and fun for all ages
Admission: $4 for adults, $2 for ages 2-17
All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The airport is easily accessible by Metrorail – just a short walk from the Green Line’s College Park/University of Maryland station.

Join us for an exciting air show featuring aerobatic performances, and 100 years of flight at College Park Airport, the world’s oldest continuously operating airport. Airplane rides* will be showcased, along with aircraft displays, children’s activities, food and craft vendors, entertainment and refreshments. See the plane that started it all – a 1909 Wright Military Flyer will be unveiled at the AirFair!

Bring an envelope or post card and get a special airmail cancellation commemorating 100 years of exciting aviation history.

* Please note that a government issued photo ID is required for all flight rides.

The easiest way to attend AirFair 100! is to travel by Metrorail – the airport is just a short walk from the Green Line’s College Park/University of Maryland station.

To get to the airport by car, take I-495 to exit 23, Kenilworth Avenue, towards Bladensburg. Turn right onto Paint Branch Pkwy. The airport is located just off Paint Branch Pkwy. AirFair parking signs will direct you to the parking lots you may use. Parking will be available in satellite lots near the airport; FREE, continuous shuttle service will be provided between satellite parking lots and the airport.

Please note the following closures and restrictions for Saturday, August 29 during AirFair 100!:

• Paint Branch Parkway Community Park, including all facilities in the park, will be closed from dawn to 6 pm.
• Lake Artemesia is open, but will have limited access.
• Ellen Linson Aquatics Center will be closed on Saturday, August 29 until 4 pm. Operating hours, this day only are from 4-10 pm. The Dive-In Movie feature is Top Gun starting at 8:30 pm. Fee is $5 adult resident, $6 adult non resident and $4 child resident, $5 child non resident.

The 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant remains temporarily closed.

Here are a few things that might be of interest to you:

• The Swim Club’s Crab Feast is this Saturday, July 18th, 2009, starting at 6:00 p.m.  Cost is $35 per adult and $15 for children under 10.  Call Jean at 301-935-6698 by Thursday, July 16th to make reservations.

• There is a lost Black Rabbit with a white paw hanging around [a home on the 3700 block of] Marlbrough Way.  Seems to be someone’s pet.  If you know to whom this rabbit belongs, please reply to this e-mail and we’ll connect you with the resident who asked that this notice be circulated.

• Do you have a gray box on your Air-conditioning Unit?  Years ago, Pepco had a Kilowatchers Plus program where one could enroll, have a device attached to their central AC unit and get a discount for letting them cycle your AC off for periods during peak usage.  That program is gone (probably for about 9 years), but you may still have one of the gray boxes on your AC unit.  If so, they can periodically cause the compressor to take a break.  From all appearance, the AC is working, but there is no cooling.  Then it may work fine again.  We were notified by an insert with the monthly bill that we could have the boxes removed, but most of us just recycle those inserts without reading them.  If you have one of the units and want it removed, call Pepco’s Customer Care number 7am-8pm, 202-833-7500.

• Save the Date!  National Night Out to stand against crime is Tuesday, August 4th, 2009.  Plan to participate in our “Get to Know Your Neighbors” activities that evening and turn on your porch lights from dusk to midnight that night.  More details will be forthcoming via e-mail and flyers.

An invitation to all the neighbors of College Park Woods for the following: 

1.  Opening Weekend – At long last, the Wallace building is being opened and dedicated this coming weekend. There is a public dedication event with light refreshments and opportunity for folks to come and explore the building, etc. starting at 4:00 on Saturday, June 27^th, 2009.  Opening worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 28^th, 2009.

2.     Body & Soul exercise class – One-hour strength and flexibility training on Tues/Thurs mornings, 8:30-9:30 AM, in the new Wallace building at 3725 Metzerott Road, beginning June 30^th, 2009.  There is a half-price tuition special for the summer classes.  Anyone interested can contact Shirley Werth (shirley.werth@verizon.net or 301-434-8710, ext 3) or check out the list of Body & Soul classes on the website at www.bodyandsoul.org.

Dear Neighbors:

     Remember our Community Spring Picnic of last year?  Over 75 people braved the heavy downpours to come out and have a jolly good time anyway – huddled under the picnic shelter in the park, munching on hotdogs and burgers while getting to know their neigh­bors “up close and personal”!  Let’s hope (and pray, for those who believe in it) for good weather and quadruple last year’s number of attendees this year!

Below are the schedule and descriptions of what we’re planning to have – and we’re counting on you to come help make it a success:

CPW-NW Community Spring Picnic

Saturday, May 16^th, 2009

12 noon to 4:00 p.m.

College Park Woods Neighborhood Park

Note:     In case of rain, Field Games will be cancelled and all activities 

will be brought into the Swim Clubhouse at 3545 Marlbrough Way.  

An entertaining safety video for kids & their families will also be 

shown in the Swim Clubhouse.

·        Picnic Food!  Your favorite picnic fare including hot dogs, burgers, chips, and soft drinks!

·        International Sampler – A simple food table celebrating the many places in the world where our CPW neighbors hail from.  We put out two or three vegetarian toppings (Thai, Indian, African, Mexi­can, or other – fairly spicy but not painful!) and a big pot of rice.  You can spoon a topping or two over a scoop of rice.  A great alternative to hot dogs and burgers! There is also a map of the world where you can indicate where you or your family comes from or where you’ve lived or traveled and what language(s) you speak.  You can even teach people a greeting or other expression in your language.  We have had many wonder­ful conversations with our neighbors about their experiences.  There might even be some local music in the background . . . . ·        Calling for Bakers!  Do you bake Amish Friendship Bread?  Banana Bread?  Brownies?  Cookies?  Would you like to WOW your neighbors with your culinary expertise?  If so, here’s your chance to shine!  J  We need donations of baked goods for the Bake Sale at the picnic, proceeds from which will help offset the cost of putting the picnic together.  Please contact Rose Haldemann (301-935-0136 or prhaldemann@verizon.net) to let her know what you’d like to contribute – all submissions will be much appreciated!

·        Bee-Keeping Demo with Bruce Murray – A beekeeper for over 25 years, Bruce lives in Glenn Dale, MD and main­tains a large property with gardens to keep his bees happy.  He often does bee-keeping demonstrations for schoolchildren, and he will be glad to answer your questions or refer you to other resources.

·        Body & Soul Exercise Demo – Imagine combining the inspiration of contemporary Christian music with cardio, strength, balance, and flexibility routines including Pilates and core body work.  Classes are led by ACE certified fitness instruc­tors and modifica­tions are readily available to meet your needs.  This demo class will be taught by Shirley Werth, who has been a fitness instructor for many years.  Come try a sampling of exercise routines to see what it’s like!  Wear comfortable clothes and supportive shoes for exercise and bring a water bottle.  (For more information and class locations near you, check out www.bodyandsoul.org.)

·        College Park Aviation Museum – Mary Wolfe, a representative of The College Park Aviation Museum, will have information on the museum’s activities, upcoming events (including the Air Show in August) to celebrate the Airport’s Centennial.  She will also be running a power-point presentation on the science of flight and making paper airplanes.

·        Field Games – Blongo, Hoola hoops, Sack race, Three-legged race, Tug-of-War . . . . Come show us your team spirit and individual strengths!  Madhyatu Mercado will serve as Field Games Coordinator from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  We could sure use more volunteers to help her out, and also fill in the time slot between 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.!  Please contact Zari Malsawma (240-475-2435 or lhmalsawma@comcast.net) or Rex Powell (301-935-5289 or rex.powell@verizon.net) if you can help.

·        New!  Plant Exchange!  Bring your extra annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, vines, bulbs, cuttings, divisions, seedlings, seeds, or whatever you have to exchange with others in CPW.  Plants should be potted and marked with the plant’s name if possible, and your name if you want to exchange cultural information.  Please try not to share plants that may be considered invasive, such as English ivy.  The exchange begins at 10 a.m. and will continue until all plants have found a home.  You should bring at least one plant to participate in the exchange.  Hope to see you there!

·        Storybook Nook – The Storybook Lady will be there, delighted to share a book with the young and the young at heart.  You will be able to spot her easily in her red Renaissance-era dress and snood, seated next to her treasure chest full of books.  Ask for a story and she’ll read one just for you!

·        Tables of Info & Resources – Provided by community clubs, organizations, City of College Park’s Departments of Public Services and Public Works; law enforce­ment reps, city person­nel & elected officials will be there to answer your questions.
